1. MOTIVATING
THE UNMOTIVATED
Presenter: Beverly O. Ford, a consultant with OMTI's National
Welfare-to-Work Institute.
Your participants come to you with motivation - needs and desires that
cause them to act. Find out how to identify and use both the positive
and negative motivations they bring to promote work. Learn how to transform
participants' complaints about their present lives into goals for their
future. Develop strategies that will link their motivation to your program's
goal of self-sufficiency.
2. E.A.P. - THE
COUNSELING EXPERIENCE
Presenter: Myron Zuder, Ph.D., Retiree, Summit County Department
of Human Services
One reason why just 7% of the workforce take advantage of its Employee
Assistance Program ( E.A.P.) might be that many have little or no idea
what goes on during a counseling session. Herein is a description of some
the dynamics and qualifications of the therapist, limits of supervisor
"coaching", and other discussions which may bring about increased understanding
and more participation in this valuable fringe benefit.
3. UNDERSTANDING & RECOGNIZING MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS
Presenter: Frank Lay, Supervisor, Center for Families and Children,
Cleveland, Ohio
This work shop is designed to familiarize human service/social services
professionals with symptoms and behavioral features of common mental health
disorders. Early recognition and treatment can be essential to empower
individuals and help in their movement to self sufficiency.
4. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SELF
Presenters: Michael Langford and Theresa Langford, Administrators
at UMADAOP, Cincinnati, Ohio
How do you balance the demands of caring for yourself, your work and
your relationships? This workshop will show participants how to maintain
a constant spiritual awareness that can enlighten, enrich and restore a
healthy sense of self: the results being a more positive person.
5. A TIME FOR DIGNITY
Presenter: Bill Weber, Program Developer, Adult Services Section,
ODHS
An overview on the issues involved in caring for the growing elderly
population. Information will be shared on psychological, social and financial
issues that face those who care. For the elderly. Issues of abuse, neglect/self
neglect and exploitation will be touched upon.
6. CHILD SUPPORT - A PARTNER FOR SELF-SUFFICIENCY
Presenters: Richard Prater, Director and Mary Ann Nore, Deputy
Director, Richland County CSEA
A workshop involving the latest developments in child support enforcement
emphasizing the important of effective child support enforcement to a variety
of human service programs. The child support program serves more children
for a longer period of time than any program in the nation other than education
and with long term welfare benefits giving way to temporary assistance.
Child support is extremely important, now more than ever, to the future
of millions of children.
7. PEACE IN THE
MIDST OF THE STORM: SURVIVING ADDITION
Presenter: Shirley Dupler, Clermont Recovery, Batavia, Ohio
This workshop will explore the effects on love-ones physically, mentally,
emotionally and spiritually; the importance of support and avenues
of support; self-care ("Don't Should On Me"). Attendees will be encouraged
to actively participate in the workshop.
8. WHAT'S UP WITH SECTION 8, A KEY TO WELFARE REFORM?
Presenters: Doug Shelby, Senior Community Builder/Coordination, U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development, and Lynn A. Wieland, Coordinator
of Advocacy, Cuyahoga County Department of Senior and Adult Services, Community
Office on Aging
The impact of expiring Section 8 contracts, new vouchers for the welfare
to work initiative, new vouchers for transitional housing, and new vouchers
for persons displaced under Project Hope VI.
9. OHIO HOME CARE: MEDICAID'S CONTINUUM
OF HOME CARE SERVICES
Presenters: Joel Kneep and Chuck Zalac, Ohio Department of Human
Services, Bureau of Community Services
Presenters will provide a basic description of medicaid's newly integrated
home care services program, including details on the consolidated waiver.
10. UPDATE ON PRESIDENT CLINTON'S INITIATIVE ON RACE
Presenter: Richard K. Johnson, Consultant, Akron, Ohio
Discussion of specific activities that have transpired since the President's
announcement of his initiative on race-successes and failures of activities
- potential for replication. Discussion of other ways to further the President's
initiative.
11. RECOGNIZING CHILDREN AT RISK
Presenter: Lieutenant Edward Duvall, Jr., Akron Police Juvenile
Bureau
Although not for the squeamish, this workshop is for anyone who is
interested in becoming more effective at recognizing and dealing with child
abuse situations. Lt. Duvall will present a realistic and sometimes graphic
look at how to recognize children at risk. This workshop will address indicators
of physical/ sexual abuse of children. Many indications are often missed
by parents, care workers and other social service practitioners.

12. HELPING VS EMPOWERING
Presenter: Beverly O. Ford, a consultant with OMTI's National
Welfare-to-Work Institute.
Do you find yourself doing things for participants that they could
and should do for themselves? Are you then frustrated by their dependence?
Learn how to replace your "helping" behaviors with " empowering" ones.
Shift your strategies from making plans, solving problems, and finding
resources for participants to teaching them how to do these tasks for themselves.
13. AMERICA IS FIGHTING MAD - WHY?
Presenter: Michael Langford, Administrator, UMADAOP, Cincinnati,
Ohio
From highway rage to school yard shooting, from the inner-city to the
rural heartland of America, violent actions and reactions to conflict have
become the norm in our country. This workshop will explore the roots of
"socialized violence" in America. It will also look at ways to address
and prevent this alarming phenomenon (with handouts, roleplay and self-disclosure).
14. NOT ANOTHER DROP: FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME
Presenter: Judith Petricevic, R.N., B.S.N., Lorain County General
Health District
Not Another Drop!! will answer important questions about the dangers
of alcohol use during pregnancy. What are the risks and the lifetime challenges
faced by the individual with prenatal exposure to alcohol? How do alcohol
related birth defects impact families, schools, and communities? What is
the role of social welfare agencies and the community to minimize the secondary
disabilities? How can the community work together to plan and implement
prevention strategies for women? Protecting the developing seeds of our
children is critical.
15. ALLIANCE FOR GRANDPARENTS: A PARTNERSHIP PROJECT
Presenters: Fatima Perkins, WRAAA, and Rayford Odom, Coordinator,
Community Office on Aging, Cuyahoga County Department of Senior and Adult
Services
This workshop will discuss a partnership between six agencies in the
aging and childcare network developed to provide respite care and supportive
services to grandparents who are raising their grandchildren, history and
formation of the Alliance, current activities, and plans for future initiatives
on behalf of grandparents raising grandchildren.
16. WE ALL LOVE A WINNER
Presenter: Doug Theaker, Director, Richland CDHS
If you were born a winner, and you were, then why do we have so many
losers? We all can win because we all started that way, but the question
becomes, "what happens along the way of life?" It sounds simple. Just change
your attitude, you will change your behavior and you will change your life.
But it is not easy. It takes work and you can do it. Come on with me and
learn what tools will make you healthier, happier and more successful.
17. CHILD DEVELOPMENT: HOW THE BRAIN GROWS FOR THE
21ST CENTURY

This session will focus on the latest information on growth and development
in the pre-natal, postnatal and childhood years. Researchers now know so
much more about brain growth and development. It is time for all of us
to become acquainted with this research to help the children of the future
18. CASE MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES FOR CLIENT SUCCESS
Presenter: Rita Rizzo, Principal, Rizzo & Associates,

This workshop uses a case study format to help learners recognize obstacles
to employment success, utilize community resources, inspire client cooperation
with self-efficiency contracts and create holistic employment plans for
clients. Issues such as establishing worker-client rapport, transferring
accountability to clients and providing support to clients will be discussed.
19. ADULT PAROLE OFFENDER SERVICES NETWORK
Presenters: Terry Lyons, Superintendent, Field Services North Region
and Gwendolyn Woods, Deputy Superintendent, Offender Services Network
An overview of the Field Services Section and Offender Services Network's
efforts to link offenders with employment opportunities and other programming,
while at the same time, holding the offender accountable to the public.
20. HOW DO I FIT IN?
Presenter: Michael Burns, LSW, (the other one), Cuyahoga Work and
Training, Cleveland, Ohio
In a society where things change so rapidly for our young adults there
is a need to educate them towards self-sufficiency. This workshop will
train counselors and social workers on how to stimulate young minds and
provide tips and tools towards self-sufficiency. In addition, we will examine
the attitudes, self-esteem and perseverance in today's youth and young
adults.
21. HOT TOPICS IN NUTRITION AND HEART DISEASES
Presenter: Delores Badar, American Heart Association, Cleveland,

The facts are staggering: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the NO. 1
killer in America; Heart attack is the single largest killer of American
males and females; and stroke is the leading cause of serious disability
in the United States today. Join this representative of the American Heart
Association as she outlines the latest methods to combat these killers
with nutrition and weight management.

23. KEEPING THEM ON THE JOB: EFFECTIVE JOB RETENTION
STRATEGIES
Presenter: Beverly O. Ford, a consultant with OMTI's National
Welfare-to-Work Institute.
This session will provide you with practical, easy to implement techniques
for helping your participants manage their first month on the new job when
the changes in their lives can seem most overwhelming. You will learn how
to teach participants to manage their time schedule, deal with the "sabotagers"
in their lives, develop a support network, build backup systems to deal
with emergencies, and master the critical, but often un-written rules of
the new workplace.
24. A TASTE OF PACE (POLICY ACCURACY CREATES ENTHUSIASM)
Presenters: Kitty Brown, Outreach Supervisor, Hennepin CDHS, Minneapolis,
Minnesota and selected staff
Join us for this action-packed, energizing review of Food Stamp payment
accuracy. After a brief team building exercise, selected staff will compete
in a game show format answering questions regarding Food Stamp policy and
procedures. This highly interactive program has been presented throughout
the U.S. and is, according to many participants, flat out FUN.
25. HOW TO AVOID BEING A VICTIM OF A CRIME
Presenter: Barbara Sekerak, Assistant Vice President of Training
& Development, Corporate Security, Key Service Corporation
Presentation is geared to raising the level of awareness and lessening
the opportunity of being a victim of crime. Topics covered in the presentation
are home safety, family security, travel safety and financial scams
and schemes.
26. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN LATE LIFE
Presenter: Georgia Anetzberger, PhD, ACSW, LISW, The Benjamin Rose
Institute, Cleveland Heights, Ohio
An estimated 1.2 million older Americans experience domestic violence
each year. However, few incidences are reported to agencies that can help.
This workshop will explore the nature and scope of domestic violence in
late life, including profiles of typical victims and perpetrators, risk
factors, help-seeking, barriers, and interventions across elder abuse and
domestic violence systems.
27. KNOW YOURSELF - DISCOVER YOUR HIDDEN SKILLS &
ABILITIES

Realizing and refining hidden skills (that we all possess but take for

29. HIV PREVENTION: WOMEN AND SAFER SEX

Women are the fastest growing population for HIV infection. This work-
shop will explore the reasons why women are at risk. Issues around HIV
and AIDS relevant to women will be discussed. Safer sex, relationships
and empowerment techniques will also be discussed.
30. HEALTH INSURANCE SUPPORTING WELFARE-TO-WORK SUCCESS
Presenters: Cynthia Burnell, Chief, Bureau of Managed Health Care,
and Mel Borkan, Chief, Bureau of Consumer and Program Support, ODHS
Managed Care: Many OWF/HS/CHIP eligibles receive health insurance coverage
through Medicaid managed care. This workshop will report on the current
status of the managed care program in Ohio and will describe how managed
care encourages the active involvement of enrollees in their own and their
family's health care.
CHIP: The workshop will further demonstrate the success of Ohio's Health
Insurance Option for children and how it helps families become self-sufficient.
Topics will include how to identify children who are eligible for no-cost
health insurance, how families can apply and what services are covered.
Come to hear about the difference between CHIP 1 and CHIP 2.
31. ELIMINATING NEGATIVE EMOTIONS

34. OHIO'S WELFARE REVOLUTION: WHERE ARE WE NOW?

This workshop offers an overview and discussion of how the vision of
the Ohio Works First Program is being played out. This will be an informal
look at Ohio's Welfare Revolution. Please join this exciting discussion
of the changes that are taking place in Ohio.
35. GOING OUT ON A LIMB...THAT'S WHERE THE FRUIT IS
Presenter: Mynda Bowden, Mentor Program Coordinator, Pottawatomie
County D.H.S., Shawnee, Oklahoma
Do the changes Welfare Reform brought about have you wondering what
to do about the "hard to serve"? If so, this session is a must. This presentation
will examine current strategies being used in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma
that are proving successful. It will focus on the "Mentor Program", an
initiative of the Pottawatomie County Coalition for Self Sufficiency. The
program is a local collaboration utilizing community volunteers to assist
Temporary Assistance to needy families recipients in their transition from
welfare to work. This program has received widespread attention across
the state of Oklahoma as a forerunner in Welfare Reform Collaboration efforts.

WHERE DO I START?

This workshop will provide an overview
of Ohio Victims of Crime Compensation Program, including the history of
the program, expenses covered, eligibility requirements, exclusion, application
process, investigation of applications and decision making. Specific information
will be presented about eligibility requirements of victims of sexual assault
and domestic violence as well as child victims, and the types of expenses
typically incurred by these victims and covered by the Ohio Victims of
Crime Compensation Program.

Overview of Ohio's one stop systems where
we are, and where we are heading! Summary of Ohio's twenty-five (25) systems

do not have the time to read it? What is in the proposal that will grab
me? Why should I be interested in funding this project/organization? Join

OHIO'S PERINATAL HEALTH STATUS

An overhead presentation and discussion
of the perinatal health status of Ohio. Topics will include infant morality,
low birth weight, prenatal care and birth defects. Also included will be
information on the March of Dimes and resources for professionals and an
update on the status of birth defect surveillance in Ohio.
